Moby: Last Night – Music Review

28_0421I don’t think it’s physically possibly for Moby to ever make a bad album. Each album is so diverse, each song so unique that you’ll think you’re listening to a compilation of different artists. I didn’t even have to finish listening to Last Night to know that this was going to become a favorite album of mine. Last Night is Moby’s eighth studio album and he has said that this album is a tribute to New York and its eclectic nature. The album showcases that diversity with its mix of various styles of electronic, dance, ambient meringue, and a touch of jazz. Everyone can find something they like on here. Last Night hooks you from the beginning with the relaxing electronic sounds and smooth electric guitars of “Ooh Yeah.” From there we go to that ambient meringue track I had mentioned, “I Love to Move in Here.” This is exactly the type of song you’d find playing in an underground Cuban club in NYC. It also happens to be one of my favorites off the album. Don’t worry all you dance fiends, there are plenty of pure electronic and dance tracks to keep you moving and keep you satisfied. In comparison to his previous works, Last Night is much more dance and electronic focused which Moby claimed to be the result of all his recent DJ’ing. “Everyday It’s 1989” screams classic early nineties dance —think Night at the Roxbury! We can forgive Moby for delving into the past because it’s still an entertaining track and it’s good to reminisce. As the album draws to a close, it perfectly mimics a night in NYC coming to a close. As “Mothers of the Night” progresses, I can almost see the sun starting to rise as I ride the train back to Long Island, listening to the quiet hum of the train, and watching my fellow passengers doze as the train gently rocks back and forth. The hidden track “Lucy Vida” could not be a more perfect reflection of NYC —quiet, sultry jazz. In the background we hear the rain gently falling and the sounds of a city street. This is New York. This is perfect.
