I first saw Does It Offend You, Yeah? on tour with Nine Inch Nails last summer and was blown away by their energy and their performance. The album is just as explosive and fun to listen to. You Have No Idea What You’re Getting Yourself Into is the first album from these British rockers and offers a diverse mix of electronic, rock, and dance. I’ve always loved electronic bands and this band is truly unique in sound. I can’t say it’s an album that changed my life but it is an album I can listen to again and again and still appreciate its eclectic sound and upbeat pace. The album opens up with “Battle Royale” which gets better as more instruments and sounds are added. Synths flood your eardrums and there is an electronic explosion in your head —I knew at that moment the rest of the album would be just as amazing. Not all the songs have lyrics but that is definitely not a bad thing. All the songs are great musically and the vocals are just an added bonus. The lyrics are nothing to write home about, but when it comes to electronic music, the music is always what’s important. “Dawn of the Dead” is the closest thing to a ‘ballad’ with its mellow feel and lyrics that leave heaviness in your heart. No worries though, the album picks up from there and doesn’t stop. “Attack of the 60 Ft. Lesbian Octopus” is fast paced and intense. I do get the sense that I’m being chased, maybe not by a 60 ft. lesbian octopus, but someone or something is on the move. The album ends on a great note with “Epic Last Song.” While the song isn’t necessarily ‘epic’ in sound, it certainly is intriguing and has that same mellow electronic beat like “Dawn of the Dead.” It will leave you feeling pensive and satisfied that this band actually has talent. This is the type of music that almost anyone can appreciate. You Have No Idea What You’re Getting Yourself Into means exactly what it says. I think we can expect great things from this band and I’m looking forward to where the music is headed.
