Former member of Mobb Deep, Prodigy delivers his third solo album H.N.I.C. Pt. 2. It is the sequel to 2000’s H.N.I.C. and is produced by Havoc, The Alchemist, Apex, and Sid Roams. The album was thrown together right before Prodigy left to serve a three year jail sentence for a gun charge. I don’t know if Prodigy was simply in a rush to put out the album or just had too much on his mind having to go to jail, but H.N.I.C. Pt. 2 felt uninspired and completely unoriginal. One major problem with this album is the conflicting lyrical content. The first track, titled “Real Power is People,” is exactly what it sounds like. It’s politically driven and at least makes an attempt to inspire people that we hold the real power. However, the very next song, “The Life,” talks about how Prodigy is in love with the rich life, driving Ferraris and wearing platinum rings. To me, that’s lyrical hypocrisy. Either you’re trying to empower the poor or you’re laughing it up with the rich. It doesn’t work both ways and unfortunately, that sours the rest of the album for me. Even when I ignore those two songs, however, it doesn’t change the fact that both the music and the lyrics for the rest of the album are tired and repetitive. Prodigy tells the same story so many before him have already told —he’s from the streets, life was never easy, but now he can use diamonds in his glass instead of ice cubes. Maybe some time in jail will give Prodigy new inspiration and something more worthwhile to rap about. I wish I could say something positive about this album. I can only say that Prodigy does have talent and he does have skill. Because I have read many positive comments about his earlier works and his work with Mobb Deep, I will give him the benefit of the doubt that H.N.I.C. Pt. 2 suffered because of time restraint. H.N.I.C. Pt. 2 is certainly one that can be skipped.
