Buddy Hank Band: Document My Life – CD Review

11_0610Rating: 3/5

With a guitar heavily influenced by Jimi Hendrix (but then who isn’t nowadays?) and a gorgeous heavy funk bass, this is one of the more entertaining albums I have come across in a while.  But as good as the instruments are, the vocal delivery by Buddy was not that great.

The lyrics are those of a romantic, not written by someone truly realistic.  Just as well, at least Hank is consistent in that.  Some might call his lyrics self aware and politically conscious.  What he’s really doing is singing about what he wants to be, what he needs to be, and what the world ought to be.  But he can dream, can’t he?

The substandard singing overshadowed the fine instruments during most of the album, and that’s a shame.  I wish the band would add a couple of energy packed jam sessions that could really spike this album into something special instead of just an entertaining funk band with bad vocals
