Brown Sox: Music To Quilt By…??? – CD Review

11_0600Rating: 3/5

Heavy metal was created for those who think hard rock were not hardcore enough, and thus, needed something louder and more aggressive such as…reggae?  Seriously?  A heavy metal band that plays reggae?  Well, yeah, the Brown Sox did it on the song “Punknnutz”.  I was actually pleasantly surprised by the track, that although I would have liked a heavier bass, these guys did a decent job playing the genre.

But this is not the limit of the band’s diversity.  These guys seem bent on playing another genre and label it heavy metal, for which most of the songs succeeded.  Other than reggae, they mixed in elements of pop and psychedelic rock.  They obviously look up to Led Zeppelin with the tremendously weird cover of “Immigrant Song”.  I’m not sure if they learned anything from Zeppelin though.

The band is peculiar.  They are not as hardcore as most heavy metal bands, but that’s not much of a problem, since I can hear what they are singing.  The Brown Sox seems to have mixed in too many other genres into a single album that some of the tracks became distractions and curiosities instead of attractions.  They also like to add an extra segment after every song, which is absolutely unnecessary, and only prolongs an album that could have been much better, had it been more concise.

By the way, what’s with this title, does that make sense to anyone?
