Night of Owls 4: A Shot in the Dark – CD Review

03_0507The first thing I have to say is I hate Owls. They are creepy birds that can swoop down and kill you like a Ninja. And that whole neck thing just sends shivers down my spine and wigs me out to no end. End they steal tootsie roll pops and that is not cool! The second thing I notice is there are so many tracks! Nearly enough for two discs! Talk about overdoing it. There is such a thing as less is more.

I’m not a RAP fan. I can never get my head around it but hey – I will give anything a listen. The first track I chose to listen to was called 21 Jump Street – the name of a TV show I used to watch many years ago (Johnny Depp was on it before he turned French). I have to say the beats are phat, lyrics are speeding by and interestingly arranged. I actually quite liked it.

I must admit that the more I listen the more I like. The grooves are laid down professionally and the lyrics are wonderfully created and tell a story that anyone can relate to. Night of Owls 4 is promoting more than just their album. They are spinning their tunes with a higher purpose that promotes unity, love, faith and hope and not hate or segregation. They hold themselves to their own shortcomings. I think more rappers could take a lot from these guys. I am happy that I was able to review the album. The track “Fine Line” is a great representation of this message.

Never did I expect to like it. But hey, as I said earlier, I am very open to anything. It is not any gangsta rap but very well crafted poetry of the streets. It makes sense and is a great testament to being able to get your crap together and make it a positive instead of a negative.

The album is tight. The grooves are dropped with  clarity and the beats are great. They are not as intricate as others I have heard but that crap is just pretentious fop. Night of Owls actually does something worth while for what they are doing and anything more than what they are doing would just drown out the message so Kudos. They should split this disc up into a 2-Part release and turn it into a RAP Opera of sorts.
