Junior Marvin: Wailin’ for Love – CD Review

29_0638I have to admit I have been very limited to my experience with Reggae music. Popularly made famous by the great forerunner mainstreamer of Reggae, Bob Marley it got its origins from the indigenous peoples of Jamaica, much like the slave hymnals that came to become popular music during the Civil War. Reggae was a way to express the feelings of the people over their disgust of the political scene. They were rebels fighting for a more enlightened government – they never really got it. There is a story involving Bob Marley that I recall. He was to perform at a peace rally one night. He was shot the night before (I really do not remember the circumstances) and they told him to not perform. He said he had to because if he didn’t – they would win. Like Reggae or hate it you have to admire the guts of the man.

Regardless this is about Junior Marvin. The political scene in Jamaica has not changed all that much since Bob Marley was performing perforated. Junior Marvin brings with it a strong sensibility to the strife of the people of Jamaica. They bring with them a sense of purpose and the importance of love and understanding – messages that have seemingly been lost in the flood bravado, sex and a general disregard for anything remotely artistic or creative. We have lost sight of the important things and with bands like Junior Marvin we have hope to have music that stands to make a statement as it did years ago along with their compatriots.

Each song is very special and as a listener you can sense the importance behind the words and the emotion as it is being played and recorded. It is not a polished studio album – thank god for that because that would have soiled the greatness that is this album. I like it raw and I want to hear imperfections in voice – it adds a layer to the music that you lose when you hire studio musicians and have some nobody write your lyrics for you (case in point: Britney Spears).

If you have a hankering to listen to something that actually contains substance and not the usual bull that these big name acts try to shove down your throat or want to expose your kin to music that does not include a Disney logo stamped on the artists’ buttocks (Jonas Brothers, Naked Brothers Band, Miley Cyrus and the rest of the teenage hacks) then make sure to give Junior Marvin a listen – even if Reggae is not your usually thing.
