Josh Fix: Free At Last – CD Review

29_0619I love rock music. It is visceral in nature and be virtually anything the artist wants it to be. Unfortunately many people consider themselves Rock when, in fact, they are more a pebble in the stream – more to the point: boring. I like rock music that is a little tough that has great musicality and an ability to move someone when needed, make you laugh to make your day or just make you want to jam and get into the music.

Josh Fix is hard to pin point. It is rock but there is more instrumental than anything else – I don’t know if his music really registers with me. It all seems a little bland – boring. He sounds so much like Josh Grobin and other foppy so-called rock acts. There is much testosterone to warrant a sex change treatment. “I Thought About it First” and “What’s the Point” are great samples of boredom rock (a new genre maybe? It has a certain ring to it).

I was seriously hoping for something with more oomph – more guts. Something that says “yea – it seems like I wear a skirt right now but I can still swing a bat and club you like a baby seal caught unaware” – it did not really happen. The closet we got to unique was “Rock and Roll Slut” which is more like a warning tale to would be rockers looking to hook up with chicks at a show – so guys – beware! If your chick came to the show and drinks a lot of Starbucks and works in marketing you are in for a crap time! Heed their life tales, son.

“Bad With the Superbad” is like a funky retro rock song you would expect from Jerry Lee Lewis. It is very well done and I enjoyed how it sounded. There aren’t many groups that even think about the old school rock licks so I’m glad that Josh Fix has. He repeated this same ideal with some other songs and really showed some great skill with the song “Jethro” which I think is a head nod to Jethro Tull and if so – kick ass because I liked it quite a bit.

All in all I have to give Josh Fix a thumb up and a couple stars. Was it hard rock – no – but it was more like a retro rock group which we probably need more of. They remind me of Skynard in some ways and a lot of style and substance to the music – even the dirty slutty one. I guess I could say they are very Five for Fighting sounding and a little Train thrown in there for good measure. Regardless of rock genre affiliation Josh Fix is great and deserves a listen to and if you enjoyed old Rockabilly or Southern Rock then you will love Josh Fix.
