Heavy Metal got its start in the very late 60’s and early 70’s. It began as a way to speak out against the politics of the time. It was quite effective. It lead to many bands following along for the ride and it just kept on growing. We went from Deep Purple, Motorhead and Black Sabbath to many branches of metal that would then include such metal acts like Metallica, Megadeth and others. There just is so many variations of the metal genre to begin to lump them all together. In any case I love metal music. I enjoy the culture of metal – it is what I know.
I was lucky enough to be able to review Kataklysm’s “Prevail” – a new member to the metal scene. I have got to say that despite what many people may think: metal certainly is NOT dead. It is alive and well and has been reincarnated and Kataklysm is the prophet. The songs are hard hitting and yet are able to maintain a melodic sound that shows awesome musicality on their part. There are not many metal acts that can maintain the high rate of speed and show just as much depth and musical genius but Kataklysm does not seem to have any problem whatsoever.
Not since bands like Pantera or Suicidal Tendencies have I enjoyed such a variety of songs as I had when listening to Kataklysm. The songs are diverse in style to keep you interested in what they are all about. One song in particular stood out and that was “Breathe to Dominate” – fast and furious offering from Kataklysm that makes you want to get out of your seat and punch someone in the face.
The stand out in this band is the drums. They finish as they began: fast, furious and they never relent. It amazes me how these guys can maintain their level of intensity – I would be having a coronary within 30 seconds and finishing a set wetting myself just does not sound like a good time to me.
If you had any thoughts in your head that metal was dead then you need a lobotomy. Metal is a live and psychotically well and with a band like Kataklysm on the scene I have high hopes for the future of metal as a genre that has not seen much movement in recent years. Give them a listen and become a follower.
