Vedis: A Beautiful Life – Recovery Project – CD Review

12_0701Upon downloading the tracks and learning that Vedis was a pop band my first thoughts were: “Please, don’t suck too much”. Then I was reading the track names – came off as lovey dovey hippy stuff. Not a good start for an initial reaction. I can’t help it – I was not programmed to like pop music. So I say – impress me.

The initial track, “Turning”, almost impressed me. The singing was melodic – very Nora Jones or older Christina. It was bluesy, salty and just plain good. Lyrically – I don’t know. I just was not sold on the entire song. During the chorus they stuck in this odd “breathless” sound that was just irritating me to the point of a migraine. Other than that one bit the song was pretty darn good.

Another song to note is “Let it Go”. Beautifully written, beautifully performed and a perfect song by all accounts but one: the length. They turned a 3:30 minute song into over 7 minutes. The song could be used in a Broadway musical it is that good and at that length it could very well be in one soon.

“Harmony” has to be one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. The words were powerful – the music simple but that is all they needed to do. I wish more artists could do music like this – then maybe pop wouldn’t suck so much on a broad scale.

Sometimes political and sometimes religiously motivated the songs are all that much more powerful. When a musician has the courage and strength to express their thoughts through their music – popular opinion be damned – makes the music all the more precious. With that said, in the end, Vedis impressed me. A few minor bumps on the road, but nonetheless a strong effort and a great CD filled with powerful lyrics, beautiful music and voluptuous vocals.
