Kicked Outta Purgatory: Psychobilly – CD Review

Wow – they’re going for a double album with over 20 songs to shove down your throat. The genre they’re boasting they’re in is Rock – doesn’t fit with songs like “I Want To See You Bleed”. It’s more suited to be pigeonholed into Heavy Metal. The band reminds me a lot of a cross between Motorhead and Metal Church.

And then, as sometimes happens, you hear a song that just wasn’t expected. “First” is one of those songs – it’s a punked out metal headbanging tune with lyrics that remind me of the 50’s rock age. But it’s pretty damn good. Rock Band material.

Do these guys have like 8 singers? I’ve heard a rock vocal and a punk vocal and now, with “Julia” there is a female singer on a song that is something I would expect from a Swing or SKA band but with hair on it. Good song though despite being unexpected.

There were some songs I really, really disliked due to lousy lyrics, bad lyrics and music that just left a nasty taste in my mouth. “On Cobblestones” and “Koffin Kat V8 Nightmares” are two of those songs. Koffin had some sick guitar though despite the rest being a stool sample. There were others of course.

All in all the CD is like a squirrel on acid caught in a hamster ball. That’s the best comparison I can make so let your imaginations wander around on that one.

Kicked Outta Purgatory features some seriously thrashing music that could build a moshpit to a boiling point. There is a mishmash of musical styles that are prevalent including Rock, Metal, Punk, SKA and what I can only describe as Tribal and then Euro Trash Punk. It takes some skill to be able to have that type of range – and to give 22 songs as a first demo is a big feat. I couldn’t even begin to list a reasonable congregation of possible influences – just too many to pick. Kudos on that front and respect is offered as I lay out 8 out of 10 for these guys. After awhile the songs kind of just get confused and need more defining to stand out.
