Teargas and Plateglass – CD Review

I am not someone who spends their time out at the Rave. I find them to be pointless at the very least. When I think about techno music and electronica as a genre of music I immediately find myself wandering into the realm of the rave setting. A bunch of anemic club kids in crazy getups doing something that I can only suppose is dancing. A lot of thumping of beats and gyrations that would make Elvis reconsider his hip motions. With that said I immediately had an idea surrounding Teargas and Plateglass. I was wrong.

They call themselves electronica and techno but what I heard was more melodic. It was more refined and had a very stringent purpose. Not at all what I consider those genre’s of music to be. My contact is limited and I admit that. What I have heard was high energy. It was constant movement – never stopping pulsating beats. Teargas and Plateglass is nothing like that. Their music is tight and purposeful – more spiritual in nature than. If I would have to compare it to anyone I would have to say Enya. They brought culture and musicianship to the genre – certainly something that was lacking before.

Will I ever be a fan of the music? No. I need lyrics – I need words that move. Music alone can do that, but for some reason my emotions are dead when it comes to electronica and techno. I do not become emotionally invested in it. I can appreciate what Teargas and Plateglass is doing as musicians – as a group – and it is great stuff for those who need a bit of culture and to find a way down a long path that, until recently, was just a club kid destination. I am glad I got to listen to the CD because I will no longer judge the genre too harshly now.
