The Wasted Freaks: Fright Rock – CD Review

The name of the band reminds me of myself and my friends when we were non farty old. I’m not sure if they’re trying to coin a new genre of rock or not, but the first thing I notice is the more punk style than rock. Granted, the music is very much Rock but the vocals are punk-laden angst for the track “Ignore” which is not very clean and sort of borders on ugly – but this isn’t Britney Spears so this ugly is kinda pretty.

“Lying Liar” could be so much better than it is if it didn’t sound as much as a “Smells Like Teen Spirit” rip-off let alone sound like it was recorded in a tunnel. Not good, not good at all.

There are bad songs then there are bad rip-off songs that are just plain blech and “The New Riffage” is one such song. Musically it’s another poor Nirvana rip and vocally it’s repugnant and whiney – borderline annoying.

That sort of comparison continues with the entire album and not in a very good way either. Some pants can “borrow” another bands style and it will be awesome. Nirvana rip-offs rarely sound event remotely appealing because Nirvana itself wasn’t all that great – they just spoke to the dregs of society at the time (and yes, I was a dreg).

Well – I did hope for a change in music from the first track, but it never came and got worse by adding in some lame Weezer sounding stuff that just didn’t sound good at all. Musically The Wasted Freaks bring it despite it being all too unremarkable but lyrically and vocally it falls short. One or two decent alternative-punk songs and that’s where the buck stops.
