Reel Jem: More – CD Review

You know – there really is nothing like some damn good, down to Earth, soul nurturing R&B. Reel Jem is such a conglomeration. I’m not the biggest fan of this style of music but I know good music when I hear it. The lyrics are on spot, vocals are crisp and clear and make you feel something. They are rich in tone and depth. I could see them back by a choir and belting out some classic soul and groove, rocking the hymnals.

“Waiting for You” offers up something that I consider a great love in good music: piano. I love the sound of backing piano as well as lead ivories as in Elton John’s music or Billy Joel. This song brings in the keys along with a great, down played drum so not to hide the words. The lyrics are great but the vocals are slightly weak and come off as unsure and not very in sync. This could be a production issue.

Reel Jem shows off their badass sides too giving up a fast-paced RAP & R&B fusion piece. It didn’t sound natural to me though. It wasn’t bad, just didn’t seem like them. Stick with the soul – be unique.

All in all Reel Jem can bring it to the field and run it for a touchdown. Need to tighten up the music a bit though – sounds too much like someone turned on a drum machine and automatic keyboard notes and such. Check the Rap at the door and go with the good stuff. 7.5 out of 10 is what I feel comfortable in giving considering I only had 3 songs to go over. Give more, get more.
