ICE forces Immigration Activist Ravi Ragbir to Check In – Despite 1st Amendment Win

On July 24, 2019, New Sanctuary Coalition’s Executive Director Ravi Ragbir had to check in with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency at 26 Federal Plaza in New York City for the second time in sixth months. ICE required the check-in despite a decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit that temporarily prevents his deportation. On April 25, 2019, the Second Circuit ruled that ICE can not reteliate against immigrants who are critical of the agency.  The long-time immigrant rights activist was accompanied by his wife Amy Gottlieb, elected officials, and supporters when he entered the federal building. Religious leaders and allies, in the meantime, held a Jericho Walk circling the block several times while praying not only for him but also for those who live under ICE surveillance.

After a visibly relieved Mr. Ragbir emerged from the building, New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams thanked him for his inspiration by always helping others when inside the ICE facility. “Ever time I come in this building, I see something horrific. The first time, I saw people who had no idea what was going on, had no attorney. This time we saw someone who clearly was disabled and needed some attention. They actually have no provisions for disabled people, no wheelchairs no priority seating.” He concluded, “A piece of paper does not determine your humanity, that does not take away your rights or add rights. You were born with rights, and we in New York City are going to make sure that those rights are protected.”

New York Assemblymember Jo Anne Simon, “I wanted to say to everyone we are in a time of great darkness in this country, but we are truly the light. We will make a difference.”

Ravi Ragbir is a prominent immigration advocate. His organization, New Sanctuary Coalition, pairs trained US-citizen volunteers with immigrants who are worried about their check-ins with ICE officials. For the past ten years, the organization has been supporting hundreds of immigrants facing detention and deportation.
