In a show of solidarity with Puerto Rico, a few hundred supporters assembled in Columbus Circle in New York City on July 22, 2019, calling on Ricardo Rosselló, Governor of Puerto Rico to finally resign from office. Protests have been building in Puerto Rico and the United States since the release of almost 900 pages of chat messages between the governor and his aides.
On July 13, Puerto Rico’s Center for Investigative Journalism released chat logs which contain homophobic and misogynistic comments attacking almost every group on the island. This latest scandal is the last straw for Puerto Ricans who are tired of the corruption and the handling of the aftermath of Hurricane Maria
On Monday, hundreds of thousand Puerto Ricans took to the streets of San Juan reinforcing their calls for Governor Rosselló’s resignation. The massive protest, unprecedented in the island’s history, came a day after Governor Rosselló declared he would not seek reelection next year and step down as the president of the New Progressive Party, but refused to resign.
