Ryan Cassata ‘Jupiter, It Won’t Be Long’ Review

809bb441ae1c9f86cf826a95757b7f509caea011It’s easy to get caught up in Ryan Cassata’s story. This transgender teen and LGBT activist has garnered headlines and soundbites on shows like Tyra and Larry King Live. His speeches inspire thousands; his music is another avenue to showcase his bravery.

Now that you know his point of view, the lyrics and almost-triumphant way he maneuvers the acoustic guitar strings in the 8-tracks on ‘Jupiter, It Won’t Be Long’ seems all the more interesting. The 19-year old has much room for growth vocally, at times the vocals sound very young. But, not once do they sound shaky or lacking confidence.

“I Don’t Really Wanna Go to College” is an interesting tale, and Cassata’s take on success, growing up and making life decisions is certainly relatable. “Liberation,” the title track and “Dear Lucas” are all very polished tunes. The folk-based music beds permeate comparisons to Bright Eyes and vintage Bob Dylan.

As a listener, I didn’t feel really moved until “Tell His Old Man.” In my opinion, this song showed much more depth. There seemed to be more maturity and even a stronger voice shining through.

“The Mob’s Rolling Cadillac” has a few bright spots and even felt a bit more upbeat (though the message is to not further Italian American stereotypes).  In “Sobering Up” Cassata shows a layer of vulnerability yet again and the result is quite encouraging. But, very dark.

And finally, “Grass Hat” he creates a powerful, thought-proviking prose back against his familiar acoustic guitar.

Overall, these songs are truly powerful. Ryan Cassata’s experiences put to words and music may never overshadow his own personal triumphs and experiences, but as a listener there are a few memorable nuggets in his arsenal. I give “Jupiter, It Won’t Be Long” a B review.
