Super 8 (2011) – Movie Review

In 1979 Ohio, several youngsters (Elle Fanning, Joel Courtney, Gabriel Basso) are making a zombie movie with a Super-8 camera. In the midst of filming, the friends witness a horrifying train derailment and are lucky to escape with their lives. They soon discover that the catastrophe was no accident, as a series of unexplained events and disappearances soon follows. Deputy Jackson Lamb (Kyle Chandler), the father of one of the kids, searches for the terrifying truth behind the crash.

Super 8 is a film that is reminiscent of Steven Spielberg’s earlier work like ET, Goonies, and Stand By Me. Truly he is in tune with his inner child and has the ability to bring out the best in young actors. But also know that this is not a film for the little kiddies either. It’s more like ET’s big brother, who was mistreated, locked away, escaped and is looking for some payback. Super 8 is violent but not overly gross with it. It’s funny, it’s sad, and it even tries to give us hope of being able to move on when we think life has dealt with us unfairly.

Though, with who can only be considered Spielberg’s apprentice, this film was directed by JJ Abrams (known for the TV shows: “Alias”, “Lost”, and “Fringe.” Films: “Mission Impossible 3”, Cloverfield”, “Star Trek” and the soon to be released third “Transformers” movie), Super 8 clearly has Spielberg writing all over it. However, the darkness and violence must be from Abrams.

This is a good film, full of action and suspense, Even the end credits are worth watching.
