Alu: Infomercial Gasmask – Music Review

Alu’s menagerie of songs found in“Infomercial Gasmask” is a Carni’s rapture, a curio shop of troubadours fantasies. Tall glass of Absynthe. Her ingredients for making beautifully cosmic ambient carousel rides range from toadstool tapdances to the musings of madmen like Esquivel. Upon first listen to tracks like “Asphyxia” and “Lady X” you will fall in love. Alu  tucks you in with her tapestry of songs with the final cut, “Last Lullaby. She is the most beautifully melodic cabaret rock singer you’ve ever heard. Her vocal phrasing is like the weaving mist in Marie Lavauxs wake as she strolls  through New Orleans. Much too interesting for pop fare and rapturously lyrical.

In “Infomercial Gasmask” she uses the latest technological advances in music to create soundscapes that are obviously well founded in the most beautiful musical esthetics of 18th century western music. The exotic layered arrangements in this production are a cut above her previous release without sacrificing esthetic and originality.  Throughout Infomercial Gasmask her delivery is strong and the songs are crafted as if in a Cairo themed boudoir or parlor complete with Madras and Peacock feathers.

This record greets death in a fancy French veil , like the Hungarian woman on that famous Life magazine cover. Stunningly visual music that can seduce the muse and drives us towards more fanciful and loftier urges.  Alu’s vocals on “Avalon” are thrilling, wildly confident and graceful much in the way of a ballerina on a tight rope. At times she seems to conjure the spirit of Jeff Buckley and you can almost see Nino Rota  conducting the orchestra on these sessions.
