She has been helping to drive conservative candidates to victory in GOP primaries across the country, but six in 10 Americans say Sarah Palin would not be an effective president, according to a 60 Minutes/Vanity Fair poll released today.

Palin, the former Republican governor of Alaska, did better among GOP voters. Forty-seven percent of Republicans say she could be an effective president, compared with 12% of Democrats and 21% of independents, according to the poll.

Palin has had a decent year picking candidates in House and Senate races. In 19 primary races in which Palin endorsed a candidate before the primary, 11 won and eight lost. In her home state, her endorsement of Republican Joe Miller for Senate helped propel him to a strong showing in last week’s primary against Sen. Lisa Murkowski. The race remains too close to call.

The poll was conducted at the CBS News interviewing facility from Aug. 3-5 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
