Dale Watson: Dear Johnny… A Tribute To Johnny Cash – Music Review

13_1816I came into this album originally expecting laid back, Johnny Cash covers and was kind of shocked outta my skin with the first of many psychobilly influences on first track “Guess Things Happen That Way” by Dale Watson. From there, more influences started to pop up, but psychobilly was the definite prevelant theme here.

“Orange Blossom Special” done by Deadbolt, is an all over the place psychobilly mess with random wolf howls sprinkled throughout this cachophony of crap. Stevie Tombstone tackled one of my favorite Johnny Cash songs, “Folsom Prison Blues” and this cover is definitely one of the better ones on the album. Its slowed down and definitely adheres more to the ‘blues’ part of the title than the original. “Wanted Man” (no artist name given…I don’t blame them) is done in a futuristic new metal style which is just an insult to Johnny Cash. If Cash’s family can sue Rachel Maddow for using his logo for their “Cash and Carry” headline, they should definitely sue over this Dope-like rendition. There are bigger fish to fry than Maddow, Cash relatives. This track was simply unlistenable.

“Cry Cry Cry” by Kings of Nuthin’, who always put out fun things, was another psychobilly influenced cover however more so in the style of Mad Sin so while completely different than the original, it was still pleasant, as long as you forgot everything which you knew about the original (which I had).

This album was mostly a mixture of straight up rockabilly, psychobilly and country covers but only few of them, Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash’s rendition of “Long Black Veil” and Jesse Dayton’s “Doin’ My Time” stayed true to the original country roots. All in all, this was a good but extremely varied collection of Cash covers. However, the extreme psychobilly renditions will most likely put off most older Cash fans; pick it up for yourself or a younger sibling with punk-y leanings but skip giving it to grandpa.
