Heather Hunter: The Unexpected – Music Review

12_0947Most people are well aware of how hard it is to be taken seriously as a female rapper. This difficulty increases ten fold when former adult film star s a part of your resume. Heather Hunter aka Double H didn’t let this hold her back and made it known that she wanted to be taken seriously as an artist. In line with this idea Hunter drafted top notch producers such as Chris Storch and DJ Premier, and even acted as executive producer. Despite the efforts of creating a musical gem, this album fell short.

Hunter attempts to expose a multifaceted personality which ranges from an extra tough girl, to sexpot, to just being a girl in love. Hunter bounces back and forth between these personas, making it clear that she doesn’t want to walk in her predecessor’s sole role as the sexy rapper. This flexibility is a great approach that unfortunately never fully comes to fruition in Hunter’s music. The lack of originality in her lyrics as well as her monotonous cadence lessens listener’s admiration of her desire to not be categorized. This artist should be applauded for trying to bring something different to the table on behalf of female rappers, but she should probably seek some assistance with her lyrics for her sophomore project.
