Smash Palace: Everybody Comes and Goes – CD Review

03_0553I grew up loving Rock. That is odd considering my mom was listening to twangy country and I had to suffer through my older sister listening to Menudo of all things. Somehow I managed to ignore country and really stay out of Menudo to find the love of Meat Loaf, Alice Cooper, Metallica before they sold out. Despite how hard a band was many, many years ago it was all still rock. It is refreshing to see a band like Smash Palace because they are rock oriented on a much more precise level than Nickelback. Not every song is about drugs or knocking boots with a fan. So it is definitely good to see that.

If I had to pick a band they remind me I would have to say Dio in the sense that the music is telling a story while still remaining music and not some spoken word crap like Nelly was doing a year or so ago (if a rock guy tried that they would be laughed out of existence).

Musically they are certainly competent. There is nothing mind blowing here by any means. The purity of the music comes from the vocal ability which is pretty damn good. The lead singer has this sort of Roy Orbison quality about him that is very rare to find. He could easily sing retro throwback tunes until he was blue in the face. He can carry those tough melodies and changes. His band mates are gifted as well despite the fact that the music is not complex.

Smash Palace could easily be called old school rock. It is very reminiscent of the music being produced in the late 60’s and early 70’s. A more folky vibe to it than an edge found in the late 70’s. That makes Smash Palace worth a listen because they are able to create melodic vocals with decent music backing it up and doing so on a level not seen in like forty years. They sometimes scrape out some badass solos oni the axe too so check it out.
