Munk: Modest Among the Living – CD Review

02_1442The genre that Munk is claiming sounds like its name and no, it is not funk (sorry boys) but it is PUNK! The question arises, however, as to what Punk it is. I mean – is it like Misfits punk which is thrashing, sick and sleek or is it more like the Ramone’s brand of punk that is more fight the establishment, have little real talent but still kick ass OR the third version… what I like to call “sell-out punk” which would include bands like Greenday and yes, Avril (who would be more like poseur idiot punk). Munk lends itself to being more Greenday punk than anything else, but with a more rough sound and more legitimate as a punk act but leaning toward alternative more than anything else.

You can argue about Munk one way or the other – punk, alternative… alternative punk. I dunno anything at this point other than they are good. Not like a polished punk or wannabe poseur punk like Avril, Blink or Greenday and not like hardcore, in your face punk like the Misfits or Sex Pistols. It sits somewhere in the middle of the road. I like it that way for these guys.

Musically they are not all that polished and at the same time it works with the vocal styles. There are some parts that are rap oriented which is cool – it adds some serious depth to the work. 30 Days has a great beat to it. It works on a slow movement that just flows so well – less is more.

One of the better songs that I listened to was “I Am” which is musically adventurous and vocally diverse. The sound is more rock than anything else but with some punk undertones and enough rawness to make it completely enjoyable and make it work 110%. I can’t think of anything too negative to say. I really enjoyed the varying styles that they just randomly tossed into their songs and I like the fact that they are a very nice mixture of punk and alternative.

Munk: Modest Among the Living is a great CD and is worth the listen if you get the chance. I enjoyed it nearly all of the way. I See You, I Am and 30 Days really represent a great mixture of style and genre in music and shows that they want to bring it all the way with some rawness and being imperfect.
