Mr. Awol: Wol Street Takeover – CD Review

02_1434I am not sure how I am always getting the Rap and Hip Hop artists. It is not a genre of music that I relatively enjoy (as I am lounging back in slave pants and a Dropkick Murphy’s T-Shirt). Why I don’t like the genre is that I don’t like music that is overly sampled (i.e. stealing from actual musicians) or culturally hate filled and Rap, particularly so-called “gangsta” rap, is nothing but. The fact that I just do not like it makes it even harder to give a review, but I am unbiased and so I go forward to review against the other artists I have listened to – like a comparison. I will focus on the dropped beats and all that jazz.

The first track I listened to was Animalistic. Now – I am an Irish guy – and unlike Mr. Whalberg, I simply do not get the whole rap scene. I do not like the use of the “n” word or whatever and this was a sour point for me in this tune, but hey – it’s the culture of the music. The beats are your standard anger-filled bass and all that junk. The lyrics are exactly what you would expect – unfortunately. I was getting over that until the wailing hit. As I said – I am Irish and I know a Banshee when I hear it and damn, I heard it. I guess the female back-up on this track was supposed to be in the thralls of orgasm or whatever but it sounded more like shrill screaming – annoying. It sounded like a guy trying to be homosexual (excuse me while I put on a bullet proof vest).

Alright – now that I feel safe… Wanna Cut Thee is probably one of the best songs on the album. It sounds good to me musically (at the very least). Sounds more like R & B like something R Kelly would come up with. Vocally it is weak – you can tell the singer is not normally familiar or comfortable with the song style which is actually singing.

I believe that those of you into the Rap and Hip Hop scene will love this album. It fits snugly between the folds of what is comfortable in the rap scene. I do not enjoy it but that does not mean it sucks. There are some good things throughout the album both musically and vocally. There are parts that really are just bad – production wise and vocally that simply do not work. Give it a listen – you are the judge – but if you are new to the rap scene yourself, don’t waste your time just yet. Sink your teeth into something a bit more mainstream.
