Lottergirls: Never Say Never – CD Review

29_0724Electronica got its start years ago in the late 80’s with bands like Devo, B-52’s and others. The electronic age was just beginning and we realized that music did not always have to be black and white. It could be more than a guitar, drums and a singer. It could, in fact, be more creative. We were creative then because we were on the forefront of technology. These groups were very out there and they gave way to the industrial movement then raves began to show up in the early 90s and electronica and dance pop was born and found its way into clubs because owners didn’t have to worry about paying rights to anyone or having a live band come in and could pay off DJs to spin records a heck of a lot cheaper then a band.

This is a tough situation for me. I dislike electronic and dance with a passion. I do not consider it music. It is typically sampled crap or stuff made with a drum machine in someone’s basement. Club goers listen to this stuff and get wild and all crazy – whoopee – fun, fun, fun. In any case I do have to review it. And so I wound up getting a hold of Never Say Never, an album by Lottergirls. There is, however, one slight dilemma – there is only one song.

Yes – you heard it right – one song. What is worse is it is the same song eight different ways. It is like ordering Chinese food and wanting something with noodles and you get all of these choices. This singular tune has different mixes with some being explicit and others clean and a few of them are just instrumental and others contain electronic sounds and so on and so forth. There is not much you can derive from a single song. One is heavy – sounded decent as an explicit club and dance mix. Another I liked is purely instrumental and that adds a little extra something to the song. I can definitely see how some people can get into this genre of music. It makes me actually want to hear more. I want another song though – the same song eight ways just does not cut it.

Will I ever be a huge fan of this style of music – probably not, but I do enjoy this one song. I am looking forward to hearing what else they can come up with. But what I hear so far is good stuff and Lottergirls needs to be watched closely because they could drop without anyone ever knowing or realizing it.
