Wykked Wytch: Memories Of A Dying Whore – CD Review

13_0613Something wyckked this way comes. I haven’t spent a lot of time listening to metal – not since I was younger and Slayer reigned in blood atop the mountain of metal gods. Over the years metal gave way to grunge then to alternative then pop then rap and now we are coming full circle with the corporate pop sensations like Miley Cyrus afflicting our ears with wretched junk.

It makes sense that metal would make a come back – a stand. To say enough is enough. Wykked Wytch could be THAT band. The musicianship is quality I have not heard in a long while and it is beyond refreshing – especially in a metal band. The music used on the tracks is melodic, deafening and damning and just all around ass kick awesome. It could even make Ricky Rachman stop being a wuss.

I cannot say enough about the album. There isn’t anything I can thnk of outright that I did not like. That says a lot as I was never a bug fan of scream metal (or, as we called it in the day: deaf metal) but this rocked it out of the ball park in so many ways. On many songs the hooks were so melodic – classical music sounding – it drew you in then when you weren’t looking slammed you to a wall and stole your money like a transvestite hooker on shore leave. Yea – it was that damn good.

I love the song Sweet Dreams by the Eurythmics and I even enjoyed Manson’s version quite a lot. Wykked Wytch has their own versions… they actually have two: a clean one and a not so clean one. I was hesitant at first but damn I loved them. They were so hard and thumping they’d make Clay Aiken explode which, while thinking about, may not be such a bad idea.

When the lead singer isn’t doing his deaf metal voice he has a very rich sound that they could think of using more to hit a more mainstream audience. But, as it stands now, they got me hooked and I think a few of these gems will find their way onto my MP3 player.
