The Billie Burke Estate: Let Your Heart Break – CD Review

bburkeestate2 If you like the Stray Cats, lighter sounding Billy Joel or are a fan of college Key Clubs, SKA or anything even remotely like any of that then you’ll probably enjoy The Billie Burke Estate. I like that music and I enjoyed, without a doubt, “99 Liberty Lane” which is an upbeat sort of tune in quasi-swing style but seemingly about 911 in some parts – so it could possibly offend a few people (well, millions) but hey – I like controversy.

Dare I say it – I can’t believe I’m about to. Ugh. “I Want You” is a strong offering and is incredibly reminiscent of early Beatles and Billy Joel but with an edge as found in “Everybody’s Gonna Die”, a morbid yet upbeat song.

Some of the songs are just odd which adds to the coolness of the music. “Perky Muscle Girl” – an ode of love to those tight-shorted female muscle chicks and is funny yet very well constructed musically. And with all the odd lyrics in the songs they come back with a very good, musically sound and lyrically serious “Hold On”.

The Billie Burke Estate, though sounding heavily influenced by Swing, SKA as well and Billy Joel are very distinct and unique. Musically it’s all superb. Lyrically it’s so off the wall because their subject matter isn’t what you’d typically expect from this type of music – and that’s part of the overall greatness of the group. I would see them and have already added some tunes to the ye olde MP3 player.
