Steve Grimm: On The Outside Looking In – CD Review

I was tempted to dislike Steve Grimm, but it grew on me after I listened to it several times. His voice takes some getting used to and the first track “Take Time to Heal” really had me picturing a bad Beatles song from the mop top era but you have to look beyond that initial shock to get to the great lyrics and music beneath.

“Voice of Reason” is one of the best tracks offered on this CD. It’s very melodic, rhythmic and soulful. It has you feeling the song deep down inside. It’s slow and beat driven – not at all over exaggerated.

Now this is what I’m talking about! “You Are The Fire” is guitar work at its finest. Kicks you in the gut and leaves you gasping for air. No note out of place and vocals totally in tune, melodic and synced with the background vocals and music. Dance to you drop people!

“Lot Alike” is a nice, making out song – very much like old school Bon Jovi. Gotta love it. No choice really. It’s just so damn catchy I found myself chair dancing to the beat. And believe me – that isn’t easy. It’s also incredibly frightening.

A favorite tune: “Outside Looking In”. Why? Because it’s musically perfect. You couldn’t really ask for anything better. You could rank it musically up there with some greats. It’s just that good. Another great song is “Answer” not just because musically it’s wonderful but it’s such a pure song.

You can feel the energy in these songs – the love and care taken to make them. That’s what music is or should be about. Not Britney Spears flipping out in British Accents or Miley Cyrus’ 40-yr old body double or her creepy has-been father. This is music – pure but certainly not simple. 10 out of 10 is masterfully achieved.
