Second Hand Poets: Virginia City Lounge – CD Review

Second Hand Poets is rooted in bluegrass style rock. If you like Train then you’ll love Second Hand Poets.

“Cry You Might” has some very interesting and intriguing guitar work that just simply fascinated me. Lyrics are painful and the vocals convey that fact. Slow and heaving it allows you to feel the intent of the song.

There is something about bluesy notes that make you want to hang yourself. It’s a wonder that more blues singers haven’t been found dead by their own hands but I suppose it’s refreshing or relieving to get it all out. “Lonely Valentine” is a soft, slow painful dirge.

Just when I thought I’d be lulled to sleep “Steam Rollin’ Engine” came on and was a lot faster than anything else but just wasn’t a very strong song musically or vocally. Now “Rambling Creek” is an excellent song with story-filled verses and depth in the vocals. You could knock out the drums on it entirely to make it really stand out as a guitar instrumental and I think the song would go from a 9.5 to 11.

“To The Devil I’ve Been Tied” is an aggressive song – linking them to the devil – doin bad things but doing them well. It’s a good song with great music, lyrics and vocals. Absolutely zero fault.

I’m not the biggest fan of Bluesy Bluegrass Jazz type of music but I really did enjoy Second Hand Poets. There are many influences found on the CD. There are several styles of music that range from classic rock and bluegrass to country and 50’s rock. It’s blue collar music thru and thru and very well produced and as such warrants 9 out of 10.
