Rude Rooster: Step Up – CD Review

With a name like Rude Rooster I wasn’t exactly expecting what I got: something kick ass. Name change maybe? Try out Cockfight. That could work – I just want some credit and maybe cash.

“The Edge” and “Fight” are great examples of why I love music! They are rich in lyrical content; vocals tight as hell and the musicianship is par none. I would buy this album and any others they would make just based on the first two tracks. “Fight” offers a bit of a different style musically bringing a more contemporary feel to old school classic rock styles of bands like Foghat or CCR.

The title track, “Step Up”, is a good enough song. I don’t enjoy it as much as the others on the CD especially not compared to “Into Me” which so damn catchy, slow pounding rhythm that you have the need to slam dance and stage dive.

You wouldn’t be a crunching, ass kicking rock band without showing your soft side. They all do it – it’s in the rocker code. Power ballads are like butter on the pop charts. Rude Rooster does one better with “CROI” by giving us an instrumental that is beyond beautiful. It’s poetry without words and though it may never top a chart – it’s greatness. The traditional power ballad is here as well making an appearance as “October”.

“Blame” is an interesting song that takes a page from Meat Loaf by bringing in a target of the story to help tell it – giving it multiple perspectives. Very creative and it works very well.

Besides the name, Rude Rooster is a 10/10. I can’t find fault in anything no matter how hard I try.
