Cloverfield (2008) – Movie Review

0012The night began like most other people’s do on a Friday night. Friends, booze, music and a little drama then WHAM! Explosions, screams and Lady Liberty loses her head over it all. Welcome to “Cloverfield”.

I was enthralled from moment one. My first thoughts were “Whoa” then “This won’t end well”. The hairs on my arms were standing on end for the entire film and never went down until some minutes after leaving the theatre. It just never let up – I was on the edge of my seat the entire time.

“Cloverfield” is, without a shadow of a doubt, the best damn creature movie.. EVER! I do not say this lightly people because I am a horror fan, not just that – a Fanatic. Creature films have been a staple of the horror genre for years (though not really classified AS horror they still maintain that genre tag along with action and what not) so movie over King Kong, screw 20,000 Leagues, go bite yourself Wolfman and take your retirement Godzilla because, Kids – “Cloverfield” is in the hiz house!

If you’re a fan of monster movies then “Cloverfield” will pay its respects to Godzilla minus lame rubber suits and Asians running around like ants in Hong Kong streets. There will also be no Mathew Broderick and bad CGI and, in fact, “Cloverfield” is an all virtually unknown cast. This adds to the validity of the story and its setup much like Blair Witch did as a telling of these “true accounts”. The movie would die a miserable death if someone like Toby Maquire was in it.

Never have I wanted to be one of those critics who use words and phrases like: “Awesome!”, “Electrifying!” or “Must See!” so instead I’ll say: “Orgasmic!”, “The Viagra of Movies!” and “This is why guys get lap dances!”.

Sure – you’ve heard people piss and moan over getting sick due to the way in which the film was shot. Sorry people but this is called STYLE and this one in particular, Cinema Verite` or “Cinema Truth”, is a documentary style of filmmaking where there is, to our knowledge, no directorial control. It’s seeing people AS they are. If you liked Borat, Blair Witch Project or This Is Spinal Tap then you have seen this style before. Some people have coined the phrase “mockumentary” – but that is more of using the style in order to promote laughter and what not whereas Cinema Verite` is a legitimate way of filming that we can thank the French for.

“Cloverfiled” should be up, and win, for best picture. I don’t care if a cut off was missed – it deserves to be there ESPECIALLY amongst the swill that is currently there (Juno). So paPOW! to Oscar!

Basically do yourself a favor. Go see “Cloverfield”. I don’t care if you’re hurling on your neighbor or get a splitting headache – it’s worth it. If it’s that bad then drop a Dramamine and man up to see this movie instead of complaining about style and substance etc. etc. And if you’ve read those other reviews that say you NEVER see the monster – they’re not telling you the truth and are probably the idiot running out of the theatre with their hands over their mouths.
