I like Jessica Alba and I like movies that are a bit “off” – horror movies with a twist that are unique are great in my opinion. Upon wanting to see The Eye I thought the thought behind it was unique and I knew the Japanese version was pretty damn creepy and cool. So – of course – I thought that the US version would have had that same edge. It didn’t.
The flow was good although incredibly linear. Plot holes abound. The credit opening is the usual “scary sequence” hat sets up what we may (and sometimes, may not) see later on in the film. Once the actual movie begins we start out by introducing Jessica Alba’s character. She’s pretty and blind – and a violinist. It’s a great way to show how you can overcome a debilitating injury. Thing is – she’s happy. She’s adjusted. Her life is great. So why bother with surgery to get your eye sight back?
The simple answer is guilt – from her sister – that caused the injury in the first place. She gets someone’s eyes and is adjusting well – until she begins seeing shadows that aren’t there. People that she interacts with who are scary and, you guessed it, not there. Her surroundings melt away to new, frightening ones. All of which are clues to a well-planned Final Destination-like ending that kind of just fizzles. Instead of anyone believing our sweet pea they just think she’s either going insane or it’s an after affect of the surgery.
The acting was great as is the camera work and directing. The movie was good, very solid but you can definitely wait until video release for it. All in all it’s a C. It’s not the greatest thing since the invention of the fluffer nutter (and for those who don’t know that’s peanut butter and marshmallow fluff on bread) but it’s still passable.
