Small Town Sound ‘For Mama’ EP Music Review

It’s a way of living. It’s a lifestyle. It’s a state of mind.

The Red Dirt country-flavored For Mama EP from Small Town Sound is bushel of brews and bros, along with twang tendencies and tight music beds. Containing a generous amount of fun and swag, Small Town Sound delivers a few charmers.

The opening track “Whiskey” is an easy swallow. The relatable lyrics are not as depressing as the hurt in a Johnny Cash track, but nonetheless, the Oklahoma-based band works the song. What they lack in some of the character of Leon Russell or Jimmy LaFave, they make up for in solid fun.

“Racing To You” and “Tailgate” are both solid offerings that dig deeper than “Whiskey.” They further trek into the lifestyle and honky-tonk, bluegrass hinting genre. It’s like the southern rock – country -roots game amp’d itself up from the first song.

“Harder Times” rounds out the nearly handful tracks on the EP. While listening to this and all the songs, it’s easy to feel the small town bar vibe. Maybe I wanted more sweeping, lush songs pregnant with deep bass and and steel guitar. Like Oklahoma, you get what you get and it is what it is.

And, that’s just fine.
