Ships Have Sailed ‘Moodswings’ with Companion Mix EP – Music Review

For those of us living in the Midwest (I’m smack dab in Omaha, Neb.) the idea of being in California calls to mind clear blue ocean waves, palm trees and an endless summer.

When I closed my eyes and listened to the prolific ‘Moodswings’ by Los Angeles electro pop rock duo, Ships Have Sailed, those images not only expanded, but they created this even bigger, brighter panorama view of the west coast and one’s state of mind while dreaming blissfully. I wasn’t disappointed and Ships Have Sailed call to mind Owl City, a few brushes of U2 and Angels & Airwaves.

In “Drive” this catchy tune starts out with a slow buildup (think U2’s “Where The Streets Have No Name”) and channels into a anthemic melody. Not only is the song catchy (radio ready!) it’s layered with colorful textures and clear vocals.

To me “Summertime” really created a California-esque mood. Again, a fun, catchy tune, but strong enough to not be a replication of the previous track, or the following “Out of Time” and “If Only.” Actually, that’s what surprised me the most and I welcomed was that while the songs sounded true to their wheelhouse, Ships Have Sailed take the listener in several directions and at their core create unique, fresh pieces.

Other standout works include “You Should Know” (a pining piece with an undertow of catchy electro – superb pop guitar work) and “Echos.” With 11 tracks total, fans of Owl City, OMD and even Grouplove will find something they like here.

The companion mix-CD is just that – a strong remix of these tracks with a bit different twists and turns. Overall, both collections are exciting works – no matter where on the map you’re listening!
