Soulful Sundays – Travel News

20130420_1021During a recent trip to Bangalore, India, I was fortunate enough to attend the first Sunday Soul Sante

of 2013. This popular market, whose motto is FUN. FLEA. FOOD. MUSIC., occurs only 5 times a year. The March 17th market was held at a new location, the ITPL Cricket Grounds in Whitefield and was, despite its distance from the city centre, more popular than ever before. Celebrating the creativity of Bangalore with over 200 fashion, art, food and other stalls, this market encourages its visitors to step outside of their manic day-to-day lives and give their souls a chance to rest by feeding them on good food, good vibes and good entertainment.

Sunday Soul Sante is an ideal place for a family excursion as it boasts not only an activity centre for children, but also a talent contest that is open to all ages. Adults can browse the many craft, clothing and food stalls while listening to live bands and DJs perform on a central stage. Strikingly unique hand-painted shoes are a must-have, as are the beautiful items of jewellery, the 100% organic cotton clothing, breath-taking saris and hand-crafted terracotta ornaments for the garden. A visit to the market is not complete without indulging in some soul food. Traditional favourites such as pandi curry and barfi are offset by candyfloss, cupcakes, kebabs and pizza. Don’t forget to try a lassi – sweet or salt, according to your taste.

A word of warning though – with up to 17 000 visitors on a single day, parking can be a problem. Consider carpooling with friends and family, or using local transport. Also, due to the large numbers, quite a lot of dust is shifted, so don’t wear your best shoes, and try to carry a bottle of water with you.

There is a small entry fee of approximately 50 rupees, but this is well worth the price, especially when you realize that the profits from one out of the five annual markets are donated to a charity for underprivileged children.  Sunday Soul Sante really is a market for the soul!
