Bluebird Garage Market – Travel News

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA39 Albertyn Road, Muizenberg, Cape Town, South Africa
Fridays 4pm-10pm

An old airport hangar in Cape Town’s coastal suburb of Muizenberg has become home to a weekly food and craft market. Most Friday evenings I find myself drawn to the Bluebird Garage Market by the good, affordable food that is made right before your eyes, as well as the sweet and savory delicacies, jewelry, locally-made clothing and fresh produce. Though Muizenberg might feel a bit out of the way, it is no more than a quick drive along Main Road; remember to choose the scenic route over Boyes’ Drive. If you are lucky you might even spot one of the whales that come to mate and give birth in this bay.

Food dominates at the Bluebird Garage Market with plenty of choices for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians. There are delicious organic wraps, homemade Italian gnocchi, cannoli and lasagna, Chinese dumplings and stir fry, Indian food, home-smoked sausages, pancakes, gourmet pizzas, Portuguese Prego rolls and a host of other delicious meals and snacks. The best and most unmissable of all are the chocolate brownies, which come in several equally lip-smacking flavors, including double chocolate, mint, chili, walnut and orange. Wash your dinner down with locally brewed craft beer or wine. A deposit is required for the glasses, but is returned swiftly when the glasses are brought back.

After eating it is time to look at the handmade jewelry – one of the stalls boasts necklaces, rings and brooches made entirely from the internal organs of old watches. All the cogs and springs have been recycled into unique items. There is also recycled vintage clothing, Africana books, olive oil and fudge. A kids’ corner keeps children occupied and dogs on leashes are also welcome. Smokers are invited to go to an area out back to light up. Be prepared to sample far more food than is good for you and don’t

forget to purchase the fresh organic produce on the way out.

The venue is fairly small and at its peak, between the hours of 6 and 8pm, seating at the long benches can be hard to come by so be prepared to eat on your feet. There is guarded parking in both Albertyn and  Cromer roads. As Muizenberg isn’t the safest area after dark, do make a point of parking in one of these well-lit and guarded roads.  A tip to the car guard of between R2 and R5 is expected.
