Jonquil: Point Of Go – Music Review

Point Of Go by Jonquil delivers 11 fresh tracks of bass and beats to the U.S.  This is the second full-length studio album by the British band, and the first to be released stateside.  For a first attempt at the American audience, I’d say it’s pretty good.

It is obvious that the members of Jonquil are talented.  Their sound is a mesh of Coldplay, Vampire Weekend, some New Wave, and a dash of the 80s – very easy on the ears.  One can listen to the album while dancing at club just as easily as they might while driving on a road trip.  I have to admit the album as a whole reminded me of being out on the town with my friends, bar hopping and dancing.

Jonquil is listed in the Alternative genre of music, however their music seems a bit poppy for that, a bit too electronic to be poppy.  This is music that can easily be played on your local college radio station.  And while I like their album Point Of Go, I do not think it will be come my favorite album ever and played to the point where I’ll need a replacement.

Point Of Go is a bit of a tough listen to from start to finish if you’re trying to stay awake because the album falls prey to what a lot albums do (and artists for that matter), which is to be horribly monotonous, repetitive, and homogenized.  Most of the songs on this album sound like one another, and at one point I realized that a few songs had passed where there was no definite beginning or end to any of them.  I do not, however, think this characteristic of Jonquil’s musical talent, and I believe their future work will include a more diverse sound and distinction between songs.

I look forward to seeing what comes from Jonquil in the future.  In the meantime, I will continue to thoroughly enjoy Point Of Go.
