Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz and his chief of staff Carlo Scissura have both been fined for breaking the city’s conflicts of interest law.
The violation occurred in 2009, when Markowitz used Scissura, to handle the closing on his new home.
The city’s ethics law prohibits public servants from entering into a business deal or financial relationship with an employee or a boss.
Markowitz was ordered to pay a $2,000 fine and Scissura was fined $1,100.
According to a report released by the city’s Conflicts of Interest Board, Scissura had initially recommended that his boss use an attorney who works at Scissura’s law firm to help with the house purchase.
In the end, that lawyer couldn’t attend the closing because she was on maternity leave.
Scissura told the board that he then stepped in to represent his boss at the proceeding.
