Hurricane Danielle has strengthened slightly

Hurricane Danielle has strengthened slightly, its maximum sustained winds reaching 85 mph at 5 a.m., the National Hurricane Center in Miami reports.

The Category 1 storm is about 795 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands, at latitude 18.8 north and longitude 51 west. It is moving to the west-northwest near 17 mph.

Over the next couple of days, Hurricane Danielle is expected to slow down and turn toward the northwest. It should get stronger over the next two days, though it is not expected to make landfall in the United States.

Elsewhere, a tropical depression appears to be developing about 300 miles west-southwest of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands. It is heading west at 15 mph, and there is a high chance — near 100 percent — that the system will become a tropical cyclone during the next two days.

Meanwhile, a weak low pressure system over the western Gulf of Mexico to the east of Southern Texas is producing disorganized cloudiness and a few thunderstorms. There is a low chance it will develop into a tropical cyclone over the next two days, according to forecasters.
