New coalition "Community Action Alliance on N.Y.U. 2031" will challenge the expansion plans of the New York University

In response to the suspension by the Manhattan borough president, Scott Stringer, of a community task force on New York University’s expansion plans, a coalition of a dozen Greenwich Village community, preservation and parent groups have formed to register their concerns about the project. Mr. Stringer’s office said he decided to delegate the process to the community board as the project begins to go through a formal public review and approval process this fall.

The new coalition — called the Community Action Alliance on N.Y.U. 2031 — is pushing to ensure that the recommendations of the original community task force are adopted by elected officials and the local community board, which have not yet taken a position on the N.Y.U. plan.

The plan, known as N.Y.U. 2031, calls for adding six million square feet of classrooms, dormitories and offices over the next 20 years on the core campus and other locations. In an Aug. 6 letter, the new alliance urged elected officials to have N.Y.U. consider alternative locations such as the Financial District, insisting that the proposal “is too much” and would “inalterably destroy the quality of our community.”
