Vikings coach Brad Childress says Brett Favre hasn't told him he's retiring

Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress said Tuesday that QB Brett Favre has not informed him that he won’t play in the 2010 season.

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune and Fox Sports reported earlier Tuesday that Favre had informed the Vikings that he would not return for a 20th NFL season.

“This is a very fluid situation,” said Childress, who added he had communicated with Favre within the past 24 hours.

Favre, 40, had left ankle surgery in May and told USA TODAY last week that he didn’t know if his body could withstand another NFL season. But after two aborted retirements in the past three years, many are questioning how sincere Favre might be about retiring.

Childress, who said Favre’s decision — whether it’s to return or to retire — won’t surprise him, did not address whether he would welcome Favre back during the regular season.

“There are alls kind of if/then hypotheticals,” he said. “Right now all I know is we have a film study (coming up). We’re day to day right here.”
