We Walk This Road, Robert Randolph and The Family Band’s first record since 2006’s Colorblind, opens with a crackle. Pop and hiss. The listener expects to be greeted, as usual, by Randpoh’s full-bodied Sacred Steel playing and trademark thick, swampy, blues-addled sound. Instead, they get a 20 second snippet of the past. A timeless a capella snapshot of where We Walk This Road comes from; 100 years of American blues, country, gospel and rock music.
From Dylan’s “Shot of Love” to Prince’s “We Don’t Walk” to old field recordings, to the country-lilt of album highlight “If I Had My Way” (featuring Ben Harper), producer T Bone Burnett and Randolph culled the album’s 14 tracks from the annals of American roots music. During the lively and impassioned recording sessions, We Walk This Road became more than simply a new album from Robert Randolph. With the help of guests such as Leon Russell and Doyle Bramhall II, it evolved into a joyful romp through the musical styles that not only have defined Randolph’s playing his entire life, but the musical landscape of American music itself.
