Students from Charleston College carried signs and yelled cheers in counter protest of the anti-gay, anti-Jewish Westboro Baptist Church

Police officers kept students on one side of Wentworth Street and the church members on the other side.

Students wore colorful outfits and carried signs that ranged from religious opposition to what one on-looker observed as “fighting nonsense with nonsense.“

Some students like Joe Quinn organized a silent march past the WBC but students followed their emotional and creative insticts to form a large, energetic crowd once the anti-gay, anti-jewish group began singing and holding up their signs.

The Topeka, Kansas-based church, which gained notoriety for protesting at fallen soldier’s funerals, has been protesting in various places around the Lowcountry on Monday and Tuesday.
