INDUSTRY NEWS

*** – APPLE REPORTEDLY BUYS LALA MUSIC SERVICE

If Lala is now part of the Apple fold, it would mark a departure
from the approach that Apple has taken to music since launching
the iTunes Store in 2003. The iTunes Store has always offered
music on an a la carte basis, with users paying to download
specific tracks and albums. Apple executives – including CEO
Steve Jobs – have repeatedly argued that customers like to own
their music. “Customers don’t seem to be interested in
[subscription-based music services],” Jobs told Reuters in
an
April 2007 interview. “The subscription model has failed so far.”

http://www.macworld.com/article/144782/2009/12/apple_lala.html

*** – COMCAST – NBC UNIVERSAL MERGER

Comcast and NBC Universal’s planned merger would form one of the
most powerful media companies in the world. This mega-merger is
way too big, according to advocate group Free Press. The group is
working overtime in Washington and with activists to stop the
merger.

*** – PETE SEEGER: ‘SING OUT!’ MAGAZINE NEEDS YOUR HELP

Pete Seeger is asking us to join together to help a folk music
institution. Since 1950, Sing Out! Magazine has been one of the
most effective and respected ways for musicians to share and
learn. As Sing Out! heads towards its 60th anniversary next
spring, its non-profit parent – which also produces “Rise Up
Singing,” Sing Out! Radio Magazine and Pete’s newly revised
autobiography Where Have All the Flowers Gone – is fighting for
survival. Throughout its existence, Sing
Out! has always operated
close to the bone financially, but recent economic conditions,
along with the current state of the print trade and periodicals,
have come together to put the very existence of the magazine and
organization in real danger. If you care about folk music, and
want one of its community’s strongest voices and allies to
survive, check out Pete’s message.

*** – LIVE NATION AND ITUNES JOIN FOR LIVE MUSIC PROGRAM

Live Nation has joined with the iTunes Store to launch a new live
music program. Live Nation Studios will now offer exclusive
recorded and filmed concerts from its network of “wired” venues
for purchase and download only on iTunes. Exclusive live
recordings from OK Go, Jesse McCartney, Saving Abel, A Fine
Frenzy, Duffy, Plain White T’s and Ziggy Marley, to name a few,
have already been released, with many more to follow.

*** – MYSPACE HOPES HIGH AS IT LAUNCHES MUSIC SITE
IN UK

MySpace has expanded its presence in the entertainment market
with the British launch of its music service as the social
networking site seeks to reinvent itself after being eclipsed by
rival Facebook. MySpace Music is already up and running in the
United States, and aims to combine music content in the form of
songs, videos, artist profiles, playlists and charts with social
networking allowing fans to share their discoveries online.

*** – UK INTERNET FIRMS RAIL AGAINST DIGITAL BILL

Several high-profile internet companies, including Google, eBay,
Facebook and Yahoo! Europe, have sent an open letter to Britain’s
Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, opposing
new legislation which they say risks harming the value of
copyright and “stifling innovation.” The Digital Economy Bill,
which proposes ‘three-strike’ legislation to tackle file-sharing,
was published last month, following an announcement
in the
Queen’s Speech on Nov. 18 and was widely welcomed by the UK music
industry.

*** – VEVO SIGNS UP CBS INTERACTIVE MUSIC GROUP

It’s not another big music label, but Vevo, the highly
anticipated music video site, has signed up CBS Interactive Music
Group as a partner, which should help establish it as an online
music destination. Vevo says it will feature music programming
from Last.fm, as well as from 90 CBS Radio music stations. That
will include “live musical performances,” “in-studio appearances”
and interviews from the radio stations, according to a release.
How Last.fm, which is mainly a music streaming service, will fit
in is less clear, although the companies say it will be featured
across the Vevo network.

*** – SELLING OUT TO SURVIVE

The television has hit a commercial break, and you go and grab a
drink. While you are at the fridge, you hear something very
familiar playing in the background of one
commercial. You barely
miss it, but find out the product advertised, so you hit up
YouTube to see what it was. That’s when you realize the
background song in that commercial was in fact a song off one of
your favorite records. And it’s not even some pop artist that’s
playing, it’s an indie or underground band that you doubt too
many have heard of, but one you really like, maybe one you’ve
even seen live a few times. You sit there, a bit dumbfounded. And
you think, “What a bunch of sellouts.” But what if that artist
needed to do it to actually survive, let alone make a decent
living?

http://www.popmatters.com/pm/feature/116256-selling-out-to-survive/

*** – MAJOR LABEL MESSES WITH THE WRONG GUY

Tim Quirk, a senior vice president at the digital music service
Rhapsody, used to front a band that was signed to one of the
major labels, Warner Bros. His experiences at Rhapsody taught him
firsthand that it’s possible to build a big database that
accounts for what each copyright
holder is owed. However, he and
others contend, major labels have no incentive to put such a
transparent database in place – quite the opposite: They only
stand to benefit by obfuscating the accounting process for
middle- and long-tail bands and tracking their digital streams
and downloads casually.
