*** – GIBSON GUITAR PLANT IN NASHVILLE RAIDED BY FEDS
An international crackdown on the use of endangered woods from the world’s rain forests to make musical instruments bubbled over to Music City with a federal raid on Gibson Guitar’s manufacturing plant, but no arrests. Agents of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service made a midday appearance and served a search warrant on company officials at Gibson’s Massman Drive manufacturing plant, where it makes acoustic and electric guitars. Gibson issued a statement saying it is “fully cooperating with agents of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service as it pertains to an issue with harvested wood.” The company said it did nothing wrong. http://tinyurl.com/y9j7kxk

MusicianLink, Inc. has unveiled the JamLink, an Internet audio interface enabling musicians to play in sync from multiple

*** – COPYRIGHT TIME BOMB SET TO DISRUPT MUSIC, PUBLISHING INDUSTRIES
The late ’70s, when punk exploded and disco imploded, were tumultuous years for the music industry. A time bomb embedded in legislation from that era, the U.S. Copyright Act of 1976, could bring another round of tumult to the business, due to provisions that allow authors or their heirs to terminate copyright grants – or at the very least renegotiate much sweeter deals by threatening to do so. http://tinyurl.com/yjagm53
*** – INTERNATIONAL ACTIVISTS LAUNCH NEW WEBSITE TO GATHER SHARE COPYRIGHT KNOWLEDGE
Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), Electronic Information for Libraries (eIFL.net), and other international copyright experts joined together to launch Copyright Watch – a public website created to centralize resources on national copyright laws.
Copyright Watch is the first comprehensive and up-to-date online repository of national copyright laws. To find links to national and regional copyright laws, users can choose a continent or search using a country name. The site will be updated over time to include proposed amendments to laws, as well as commentary and context from national copyright experts.

*** – JAPAN TO TACKLE MUSIC PIRACY ON CELL PHONES
The telecom and music industry bodies in Japan will reportedly implement a system to automatically check cell phone websites for illegal music files, in order to prevent the files from being uploaded or downloaded in breach of copyright law. When
unauthorized music files are discovered, music industry bodies such as RIAJ will request the files be deleted. If the site refuses to cooperate they risk being hit with a criminal compliant. http://tinyurl.com/yh2uojf
*** – SONY PLANNING NEW ONLINE STORE
Sony is planning a new online store a la Apple’s iTunes, but with a few twists. Announced at a strategy meeting in Tokyo, the new service will hawk music, movies, books and other downloadable content geared for Sony’s various electronics, including TVs, mobile phones, music players and computers. The service, which Sony aims to launch next year, will link the company’s devices and digital content that it produces – setting it apart from other online stores. http://tinyurl.com/yjgksf9
*** – MYSPACE, MERLIN STANDOFF ENDS
MySpace Music and independent music aggregator Merlin buried the hatchet with a deal that adds the company’s roster of independent labels to the online streaming music service. While financial details of the arrangement were not disclosed, the deal offers Merlin and its members “an opportunity to participate in and benefit from the financial growth of MySpace Music,” according to a statement released from MySpace Music today.
