Former Miss Argentina 1994 “Solange Magnano,” 38, died on Sunday after undergoing surgery to sculpt her bottom. Guillermo Azar, a friend from the fashion world, said: “She only underwent the procedure because she thought it was no big deal.”

Solange’s friend Robert Piazza said “A woman who had everything lost her life to have a slightly firmer behind,” said Roberto Piazza, a fashion designer and friend of the model who often walked the runway in his shows.

He said she underwent a gluteoplasty – a procedure which normally involves placing implants in the buttocks to improve their outline – which turned fatal when liquid injected “went to her lungs and brain”.  Solange was rushed to hospital the following day suffering from a pulmonary embolism, when a foreign body, usually a blood clot, blocks the supply of blood to the lungs.

Gluteoplasty or buttock augmentation has grown more popular in recent years, with former Sugababe singer Mutya Buena known to have had the operation.

Juan Carlos Seiler, former president of an Argentinian association of plastic surgeons, suggested that the doctor who performed the procedure on Magnano might not have been “a real professional” from an approved cosmetic surgery centre. Last year, around 50,000 plastic surgery procedures were performed in Argentina, a 60% increase in five years.

The growing number of foreigners heading to the country for inexpensive cosmetic enhancements accounted for much of the increase.

Solange Magnano leaves a husband and eight-year-old twins.
