LONDON, Nov. 25 — British Foreign Secretary David Miliband on Wednesday pledged support for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, calling on the international community to exert more efforts to help end gender based violence.

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, which is a global statement calling for the end to all forms of gender based violence, kicked off the 16-day-activity against gender violence and will culminate with the International Human Rights Day on Dec. 10.

Miliband said “Violence against women undermines our efforts to achieve global security and development. The international community must be united in our condemnation of domestic and gender-based violence, and in our efforts to eliminate violence against women wherever it occurs. Britain will remain committed to this task.”

Solicitor General Vera Baird at the Government and Equalities Office also said “Tackling violence against women is one of the British government’s top priorities, and we fully support the International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women.”

“We have to work to change attitudes in order to eliminate violence against women and girls both here and worldwide, and to make it clear beyond doubt that any form of violence against womenis unacceptable,” Baird said.

In 1999, the UN General Assembly designated Nov. 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

Violence against women and girls is a problem of pandemic proportions. At least one out of every three women around the world has been beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused in her lifetime.
