A bunch of Canadian perverts with a twisted sense of humor making music —that’s the only way I can describe The Wet Secrets and their album Rock Fantasy. And by no means is that an insult! If you’re going to give this band a try, I sure hope you like distorted humor with your indie music.
The Wet Secrets is a band with some mysterious secrets that knows how to have fun and doesn’t care what you think. I imagine that must be so with song titles like “Grow Your Own F*cking Moustache, A**hole” and “I Tea Bagged Myself.” If that wasn’t an entertaining day in the recording studio, I don’t know what is.
Lyrics aside, The Wet Secrets know how to blend their musical styles well. Thumping bass, intoxicating drums, and wailing synths make this a hard album to resist. Although I feel slightly weird doing so, I can’t help but sing along to the chorus of “Grow Your Own F*cking Moustache, A**hole.” The brass section solo makes for a somewhat epic ending, if that’s possible with trumpets and trombones. “Secret March” is a marching band on steroids and I loved every cymbal crash and the enthusiasm of the brass instruments. The whistle blowing at the beginning of the song made it feel truly authentic. If only my high school marching band could have sang “Everybody loves a parade . . . Everybody loves to get laid.” Although the lyrics and their humor remind me of a fifteen-year-old boy, there is nothing amateur about Wet Secrets’ music.
It may not be mind bogglingly good, but there is no denying the humorous talent this group has. If they do decide to grow up a bit, it’ll be interesting to see how the music progresses. However, goofiness works for this band, but then again, no one wants to hear a bunch of forty-year-olds singing about tea bagging themselves.
