Away We Go (2009) – Movie Review

15_1310Away We Go starts off with Bart (John Krasinski) and Verona (Mia Rudolph) finding out that they are unexpectedly expecting in the most humorous fashion.   Bart and Verona are intent on welcoming their new child into the world where they have a sense of community and other family, so when they receive news that their only family in town is leaving (very funny bit performances by Catharine O’Hara and Jeff Daniels), Bart and Verona must then decide what to do.

From there Bart and Verona go on an adventure with the intent of finding a new place to call home, realizing they have no obligation to stay where they currently are without family and friends.  Their adventure takes them through a series of laughs and shocking realizations about life, love, and the concept of family.  Travels from Phoenix to Montreal take the couple looking for happiness and peace only to realize that even the most seemingly perfect situations have a dark side… or a nutty side, for that matter.

Away We Go has a wonderful ensemble cast including Maggie Gyllenhaal, Allison Janney, Jim Gaffigan, Melanie Lynskey, and Paul Schneider in addition to the aforementioned O’Hara and Daniels.  Krasinski and Rudolph give exceptional performances in this film and display great chemistry as a couple in love awaiting their baby’s arrival.   There are moments where sheer emotion is conveyed by Krasinski’s and Rudolph’s facial expressions and body language that exceed the constraints of verbal communication and enhanced the already well-written script.  This movie would not be nearly as good were it not for the entire cast, especially Krasinski and Rudolph.

Overall, Away We Go is a very poignant movie that touches on some rather deep emotions yet leaves the viewer with a lighthearted feeling at the end.  Well directed, well written, and put together quite nicely, Away We Go is definitely worth the trip to the theater.
